"Summer Superheroes" Live-audience recreation of Doctor Who & Lone Ranger Radio Shows

On Sunday, July 26, Project Audion performed two radio dramas in front of a live "studio audience" at the Public Library in Grapevine Texas. We called the pairing "The Audio Adventures of the Summertime Superheroes."

The first was a lost 1960s' radio pilot spun off from the BBC series "Doctor Who." In 1966, as the BBC science fiction television show Doctor Who was captivating British audiences, an attempt was made to create a radio version which would star Peter Cushing from the movies. A pilot episode was written and recorded, but the project went no further. The original recording has been lost, but the pilot script survived.

The second was recreation was a 1949 episode of classic western adventure, "The Lone Ranger." The Lone Ranger was, of course, one of the definitive radio dramas of the 20th century, running for thousands of episodes across multiple decades; spawning a still-watched TV series and multiple movie versions. William D. Tate, the mayor of Grapevine Texas who celebrates his 50th year in office in 2026, was a Lone Ranger fan as a young lad, so as part of his celebrations this year, Project Audion asked him to be part of the cast of his favorite childhood show. We even found a character for him to play named Mayor Tait. This episode from 1949 was later reworked into a TV episode, but you'll see it performed here before a live audience.
